Abstract

The article explains how to understand the work of the great author and what it is about. The hypothesis that the protagonist of Goethe's work symbolizes humanity as a whole and its life. Аnd the tragedy itself tells about his life, history and future. The meaning of some other symbolic characters is also revealed.
