Abstract

The paper is devoted to the study of the pragmatic potential of the Turkish hypocoristic names. The material for the study were 82 hypocoristic forms of the Turkish personal names, singled out by a continuous sampling method from Internet forums, and data obtained through a survey of Turkish native speakers of different ages from different regions of Turkey on the peculiarities of the use of hypocorisms in speech. The pragmatic aspect of the functioning of the hypocorisms is considered in the relation “the speaker / the person who calls – the addressee / the person who is called – the communicative context”. It is concluded that the pragmatic load of hypocoristic forms of the Turkish personal names has certain national features and also depends on the communicative context, communicative intentions and the age, gender, social and individual characteristics of the speaker and the addressee as linguistic personalities.
