Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of grammar transfer of Finnish and Russian students of English in the modern educational environment. A wider range of opportunities for using English and a shift to communicative teaching methods have led to improvements in some aspects of mastering English language skills by learners in Finland and Russia. Nevertheless, the results of the study reveal that the frequency of making mistakes in certain grammar constructions under the influence of the native language in writing of Finnish and Russian students has not reduced much for the recent 15 years. Therefore, for students whose mother tongue differs considerably from the foreign language they study, informal and communicative teaching methods may not be enough for enhancing their foreign language grammatical competence
