This article deals with various models of the modernist metaphor of illness on the example of
"Chamber number 6" by A. P. Chekhov and «Death of Ivan Ilyich» by L.N. Tolstoy. Disease became the perfect metaphor at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Illness as an emotional, physical, social dignity is reflected in the literature, reflecting the main fears and concerns of modernists. The disease has also become a part of human nature, an open or hidden, but present element.
